18.04 – Failed to start System Monitor – can not find the default local file monitor type

Ubuntu 18.04 – The system monitor fails to boot.

launching gnome-system-monitor from the terminal produces the following error:

what: can not find the default local file monitor type

I have tried to reinstall with:

snap remove gnome-system-monitor
sudo snap install gnome-system-monitor
