3.5nd dnd – Does the devout exploit allow you to take an unconventional animal companion?

The question is:
The paladin's mount allows the character to take unconventional creatures as mounts, such as dragons, magical beasts and things like that.

The animal companion druid / ranger must be an animal.

The devout tour de force allows you to treat your horse as your pet companion.

So, does it give any creature any bonuses or does it need the creature to be eligible to be an animal companion?
