aircrack ng – How to make timeout work with airodump-ng on raspberry pi running buster?

I wish to run airodump-ng run a set period of time on a Raspberry Pi running Raspbian Buster.

I’ve researched here and elsewhere and tried this:

timeout 10 sudo airodump-ng wlan1mon

… but the process still runs after 10 seconds and does not exit to the prompt. I still need to use CTRL-C to exit.

Does anyone know how to stop the process using something like timeout?

Thanks.
