automation – Google Docs: How to automate Enumeration and Cross referencing Exhibits

Given a series of three photos: Alpha, Gamma, Delta. and they are enumerated in two sentences:

Exhibit 1 is a photo of an Alpha specimen, where as Exhibit 2 is a
Gamma specimen. Recently a new specimen was found as shown in Exhibit 3,
which has been identified as a Delta specimen.

Is there a feature that enable one to automate the enumeration Exhibit n and renumber subsequent instances of Exhibit n+1? I ask because should I insert a new sentence for a photo of Beta. For example, I would like to insert the sentence:

A common specimen misidentification is shown in Exhibit 3 which is known as Beta.

The result should automatically renumber: 3 -> 4

Exhibit 1 is a photo of an Alpha specimen, where as Exhibit 2 is a Gamma specimen. Recently a new specimen was found as shown in
Exhibit 3, which has been identified as a Delta specimen. Recently a new specimen was found as shown in Exhibit 4, which has
been identified as a Delta specimen.

Again feature shall automatically increment the final instance of Exhibit n from 3 to 4 when the new exhibit 3 is inserted.

I think Microsoft Word has automated sequential elements. Naturally, Google Docs has its own lexicon: what does Google Docs call this functionality. Any reference links to tutorials / references etc. are appreciated. Thank you

The preference is not to use add-ons if possible

Upon a little more thought, maybe it makes sense to create the figures first and enumerate them, then crosslink them back into text / prose?
