exposure – How to take a dark photo of a dark room?

I was trying to take a picture of a room at dusk. No artificial light and the room was quite dark – it was hard to read but not in the dark. I've adjusted the settings so that the camera's light meter is balanced in the center. I was expecting the picture to have a lot of dark tones. But the picture came out as well lit. In fact, in the photo, the room seemed brighter than it actually was. What is happening here? And what can I do to capture dark shadows?

I was shooting with a Nikon D7200 and a 50mm lens, F / 1.8
