How to move the camera smoothly when the player climbs a diagonal staircase in 2D side scrolling?

I'm working on a tile-based game, similar to how Terraria works. My player measures 2 x 3 and can overcome tall obstacles, but this creates a high instability effect because my camera is currently following the player to the letter. I thought either to set up a more fluid camera movement, or to reshape the movement of the player himself. I would like to know your opinion on how to solve this problem.
