User Interface and System Environment VariCAD's Graphical User Interface (GUI) was designed to provide fast and intuitive 3D / 2D orientation. It has been carefully adapted and developed to reflect the thinking process of a designer, so that ideas can be captured and communicated in a minimum of steps. All orders were created with a focus on ease of use.
You can start by creating a 3D model, then use it to automatically create drawing files, or you can only draw in 2D. 3D design is usually more "natural" in that it closely represents current parts and assemblies. The 3D approach is usually more intuitive than 2D drawing. Models created in 3D are easily converted into conventional 2D documentation. VariCAD provides tools for 2D updates after modifying 3D models.
VariCAD provides a library of basic 3D shapes (such as a box, a cylinder, a cone, etc.) that can be easily modified by changing their dimensions. Solids can also be created by rotation, extrusion or profile smoothing. More complex tools include rotational fusion between two profiles, smoothing between a circle and rectangle, or between different profiles and creating helical surfaces.
Solids can be added or subtracted, forming Boolean trees representing real mechanical parts. Boolean operations have auto cropping options (called selective Boolean operations). Predefined operations such as hole drilling, surfacing or grooving are also available. The edges can be rounded or chamfered. VariCAD offers many possibilities for solid transformations or editing. In addition, you can easily edit Boolean trees, either by selecting solid parts in 3D, or by selecting them in a list display structure.
Geometric parameters and constraints
Although you can easily transform solids or their parts, you can optionally define geometric constraints. Once defined, the constraints allow you to "paste" an object to a defined location. Specifically, you can remove degrees of freedom from constrained objects. If other objects are modified or transformed, the constrained object automatically changes position. For example, if you constrain a throat at the end of a tree and its length is changed, the throat stays at a constant distance from the end edge. The constraints can be defined among the elements of a solid, among whole solids or in a 2D profile creating a solid (for example, by extrusion).
Each time you enter a solid dimension, a distance in a constraint, or a dimension in a 2D profile used for creating solids, you can optionally use a parameter or even a mathematical expression that contains parameters. By changing the parameter values, you can change the shapes or locations of the solids.
3D assemblies and groups
VariCAD also provides tools for assembly. If the link between a part and an assembly is defined, any changes made to the part file are reflected in the assembly file and vice versa. Linked copies of solids can also be defined (called identical solids). In this case, the editing of an object results in the update of all its identical copies. Solid groups can also be defined, which simplifies selection and visibility changes for multiple objects.
VariCAD can calculate the 2D cutting area, area, volume, mass, center of gravity and moment of inertia. The calculation of mechanical parts is also included – for standard parts used daily by mechanical designers. There are computations of tension and compression springs, pretensioned bolted joints, parallel pins and parallel keys, grooved shafts, bearings, beams subjected to combined stresses (bending and twisting), of cylindrical and conical gear geometries and belts.
Surface development (bending of the sheet)
VariCAD can also create developed surfaces (unfolded) of 3D solids or sheet metal parts. The XY coordinates of the developed surfaces can be saved in a text file for further processing. You can enter curvature coefficients to customize your calculations to reflect materials and technology.
Libraries of Mechanical Parts and Symbols VariCAD contains standard mechanical part libraries (ANSI, DIN), such as bolts, nuts, pins, dowels, pins, seals, bearings, rolled and drawn shapes, and hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical symbols .
3D export – 2D
3D models are easily converted into 2D drawings to produce classic drawing documentation. You can create 2D views of one or more selected solids by defining the 3D views. In addition, you can also export specified sections. VariCAD supports updates to a 2D drawing after 3D modifications.
2D drawing and editing
The drawing functions are optimized for easy use in engineering. Practical features of 2D drawing include: automatic detection of objects and snap points, many snap modes, auxiliary construction lines, Ortho mode, rectangular grid, drawing layers, block creation, hatching with automatic edge detection, advanced dimensioning, finishing symbols, weld symbols, tolerance symbols and many more. You can draw in millimeters or inches.
BOM and cartridges
VariCAD provides tools to maintain the product data structure. There are links between the parts' attributes and the contents of the cartridges. You can create a BOM from an assembly or easily modify the database with the help of commands such as bulk attribute changes, sorting information, and so on. Each part can contain attributes, such as name, material type, or vendor. This data can be used for hardware requisitions, bill of materials creation, cartridge refilling, or other purposes.
The product data structure (BOM) can be exported to other systems or a spreadsheet. A mask is used for customizing the BOM. you can modify it exactly according to your needs. The mask defines the use of solid or assembly attributes, the use of cartridges, methods of exporting data from a nomenclature, and so on.
VariCAD can exchange files with other CAD systems. You can export STEP (3D), LIST (3D), IGES (3D), DWG (2D), DXF (2D) files and import STEP (3D), DWG (2D), DXF (2D) files. Files can be converted individually or in batches, converting multiple files in one step.
This version supports the 3D mouse under Linux. VariCAD commands are available from the 3D mouse buttons. The following new features are isometric views in 3D mode and 2D objects created from data loaded from * .csv files or, usually, text files (files containing XY coordinates). The user interface contains a virtual keypad available for input values and reconstructed dialog panels used for the definition of basic solids (such as a box, a cylinder). The new version has improved some parts of the 3D kernel, including the input / output of STEP files.
