Used Equipment – Is the Nikon 5100 worth it in 2019?

I recently became interested in photography and I was thinking of buying my first digital SLR. I've recently seen an offer from a reputable website, here in Romania, regarding a used Nikon D5100 (case only) at 700 RON (the equivalent of about 160 to 170 USD) ).

Should I consider buying this or should I look for something a little more recent?

network – Can not connect to WiFi but sees the SSID: Intel Corporation WiFi Link 5100 AGN, Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS, 4.15.0-43-generic

  1. Some basic information
    a. Dell Studio 1555
    b. Linux kernel version

    dave @ dell: ~ $ uname -r
    4.15.0-43-generic
    c. Ubuntu
    dave @ dell: ~ $ lsb_release -a
    No LSB module is available.
    Distributor ID: Ubuntu
    Description: Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS
    Released: 18.04
    Code name: Bionic

  2. I ran this and discovered that the wifi controller is an Intel WiFi Link 5100.

dave @ dell: ~ $ lspci -nnk | grep "network controller"
04: 00.0 Network Controller [0280]: Intel Corporation WiFi Link 5100 [8086:4232]

  1. I think my driver is driver = iwlwifi driverversion = 4.15.0-43-generic firmware = 8.83.5.1 build 33692

of the partial output of sudo running lshw

I've looked at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HardwareSupportComponentsWirelessNetworkCardsIntel but I have not seen my exact wifi card listed, which may mean that it does not work with Ubuntu. (The Intel PRO / Wireless 5100 AGN page list [Shiloh] and iwlagn driver but my card is not designated "AGN [SHILOH].

  1. My problem is different from what others have published. My WiFi can be turned on and off. I can see many broadcast SSIDs, including mine. Whenever I try to connect, a pop-up dialog box error will indicate that "Network connection activation failed"

Just to show that the material is at least about to receive, I did it:

dave @ dell: ~ $ nmcli d wifi list
SECURITY OF CHAN RATE SIGNAL BARS IN SSID MODE USED

xxxxxxxxxxx Infra 36 405 Mbit / s 82 –
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Infra 9 195 Mbps 77 _ WPA2
mynetwork Infra 1 195 Mbps 70 _ WPA1 WPA2
zzzzzzzzzz Infra 1 195 Mbit / s 65 _ –

My wireless network is displayed.

I also have a Dell D560 under Mint (latest version dated 12/28/2019 and updated) and I can connect to my wireless network. Of course, it has a different network card / driver / firmware (driver = iwl3945 driverversion = 4.15 Generic firmware 0-43 = 15.32.2.9).

I've looked at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HardwareSupportComponentsWirelessNetworkCardsIntel but I have not seen my exact wifi card listed, which may mean that it does not work with Ubuntu. I am so distraught right now. It seems that I know what is in the laptop and in the wireless driver, but I do not know what to change in terms of installation and / or software. I do not think it's broken equipment.

I guess I could install Mint on the Studio laptop and see if it works like on another laptop.

Ideas?

Dave
