campaign development – How to design a maze without it being a time sink maze and unfun?

I was planning a 1e The One Ring game where the party gets trapped in the mines of Moria and have to get out. I had asked a question about the roles here. After discussing it with others, my idea of wandering an actual maze with multiple levels and various puzzles has been pointed out that its likely to be dull and boring for the players.

I am at a loss of how to run a maze, without it being an actual maze.

It was suggested I could use a position scale which would determine how the party was doing within the maze. Various challenges and checks would adjust the score as needed. It holds some merit, but one of my big surprises is the 3rd (and secret to the PC’s) exit which is the endless stairs is going to be really hard to work in if I did it in such a way. Plus, how would the PC’s really guide their route to one of the potential exits if their not actually wandering a maze that was designed? Granted, not having to create a 40 mile by 10 mile by 4 mile maze sounds rather nice at this point.

advertising – Local Campaign Strategy – Core Towns vs Extended Service Area

I’m a local service business that services 5 core towns very well but we also service 10-15 towns frequently but can’t provide nearly the same level of service as the core 5 towns. What’s a “Best Practices” approach to this common local business problem from a Campaign Structure perspective?

One Solution I’m considering: 2 Campaigns

Have a Core Business Area Campaign with Ad groups that really make stronger advertising statements, maybe has a higher budget and more restrictive location area. And then have a Selective Business Area or Broader Business Area campaign that is a little more restrained as far as claims of what we offer, maybe has a lower budget and reaches a larger location?

If this is a good solution, would it be OK if the locations in these areas overlapped because wouldn’t the higher bidding Core Campaign campaign overwrite the lower bidding Broader Business Area campaign?

Alternatively – only 1 campaign:
With 1 campaign, I’d be able to use the bid adjustments at the location level.

I’m feeling like it makes sense to have 2 campaigns but I was hoping someone on here might be aware of best practices.

campaign development – To document house rules, or no?

If you’re playing with the same guys all the time, there are few house rules, and no one’s a rules lawyer, it’s a non-issue.

Otherwise, it’s helpful to write them up.

Rules are a social Contract
When you say, “I’m Running Pathfinder,” you’re effectively saying, “I’m running a game where the Pathfinder rules determine the way the game universe runs.” It tells players what to expect and experienced players will be able to judge actions based upon those rules prior to your actually defining the individual rolls. Saying “I’m running the Warhammer world using GURPS” says a whole different set of paradigms; what kinds of characters by the setting, and how well they work by the rules.

If making changes to core elements, its best to write those changes up and give everyone a copy.
If you have new classes or class options, write them up for clarity. New skills, keep a list. New races, write them up just like any other race in the game. New ship design options, alterations in combat, advancement, character generation, or magic all should be written up and shared prior to play.

If making setting changes, include anything that the PC’s should know about.
If playing Ravenloft, and Strahd doesn’t exist, no big deal. If playing Ravenloft, but it’s an area one can walk into/out from on the prime plane, that’s a huge change, and players need to be aware of it.

If using a rules hybrid, note which rules are in use from which sources.

NB: This is extremely common in Traveller players. It’s not uncommon in pre-3.0 D&D groups, too.
This solves a lot of arguments over what X book says in Y circumstance.
For example, in my last Traveller game: Tasks – Mega; CGen – Mongoose Playtest; Combat – Mongoose; Misjump – variant Mongoose; Psionics – Mongoose Psi Book; Trade – not used; equipment – Mongoose CR and S4; Ship Combat – mayday movement, Mongoose damage; Ship design – Mongoose Core plus house rules which see.

When consolidating Supplement Material, just list the source.
You don’t need to list the whole thing, just where to find it.

filtering – Google Analytics lowercase filter for Campaign Term did not change my data. Why?

Universal Analytics sent a notification “Property XXXX is receiving hits with utm_term parameters of the same text but different letter cases” (e.g. MY term, my term, My Term) and proposed to set up a lowercase filter for Campaign Term, which I did.

After one week, the Keyword column in Paid Keyword view keeps showing a couple of lines with mixed cases.

Moreover, if in the All Campaigns you select Keyword as a Primary Dimension it shows many more mixed cases words that came from some non-paid campaigns

I checked actual URLs in BigQuery. All these words that appear in the Keyword column do come as utm_term parameters.
