Hoarding food stuff business

Most food stuff have their season of harvest and in such season it is usually surplus such that supply is usually more than demand and this makes the price to fall and people with money buy and hoard them till when the price increases and they make profit. Have you heard of this business? Do you do it and how profitable is it?

food and drink – Where can I try a locally brewed Porter in London?

Porter is currently an unfashionable beer style, as far as the mainstream goes, so in the larger ‘chain’ pubs you’d be unlikely to find one.

However, that’s not to say there’s none to be found! Your first step is to find the right kind of pub, for which there are many resources available; the best physical one I would say would be CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide (bookshops everywhere). Online your search terms would be ‘real ale’, ‘craft beer’, and of course ‘london pub’.

Here are some specific resources which should help:

Beer in the Evening – general pub reviews

Fancy a pint – pub reviews with an ale-drinking preference

The GBG pubs of London – but without the commentary that the book itself provides.

Finally, you could always cheat and look in a supermarket for a bottled version – not as good as the real thing, but consistently a decent pint.

Finally finally, if you’re in East London I would personally urge you to try something by the East London Brewing Company – they don’t currently do a straight porter, but their mild is worth a special trip, to my mind.

food and drink – Is it possible to order airag at bars in Mongolia?

Generally speaking, no. Airag is a seasonal, niche, perishable product, that as far as I can tell is not commercially produced and is hence not regularly available at supermarkets, liquor stores or bars.

Visiting Ulaanbaatar just before the Naadam festival a few years ago, I did see a few pop-up stalls selling the stuff, but generally it’s made at home and only sold where produced.

enter image description here

In the picture above, the airag was produced in the ger (yurt) it was sold in, more specifically in the blue plastic barrel in the background. Эрүүл мэндийн төлөө!

What are the advantages of using blockchains to develop a food traceability system?

A blockchain potentially offers immutability but the strongest candidate for permanence so far is Bitcoin’s. It is not guaranteed that Bitcoin’s blockchain will still be maintained in decades time but it has been widely used for over a decade now.

Once you have immutability you can store cryptographic hashes on the blockchain for a fee or obtain a permanent timestamp. But you don’t need a blockchain to use digital signatures which is arguably the most useful cryptographic tool. Participants in a supply chain can digitally sign statements for accountability. Obviously you are trusting they aren’t lying when they sign a statement and neither digital signatures nor blockchains provide a solution to this problem. If you don’t need immutability and maximal decentralization a distributed database is cheaper and faster than a blockchain.

payment cards – Why do restaurants and cafes in Ukraine make a transaction on each food separately?

The businesses have incentives to split checks because they are used to aggressive expense optimization. In Ukraine this has been an edge case, which outside viewer sees as inability of government to collect taxes properly.

So it is about taxes (it is a rule of thumb to follow the money, so it is about cutting seller expenses anyway), but not in the way described in the earlier answer (annual limit for income per low taxation entity is above $50,000 and the threshold is high enough to not abuse customers by bill splitting per plate!).

The article I linked in comment earlier explains (in Russian) details how businesses are cheating in their sales and provision of services. One of the cases is check splitting in particular.

… Almost always you are charged twice in a restaurant of a cafe. You get one bill for the bar beverages, and the other for the snacks. The first receipt has a name of certain LLC on it, as alcohol seller license is expensive and can only be given to companies…

In most countries these methods might be considered illegal, but it has been working absolutely fine for years in Ukraine. It is massively used nowadays too, and even more to that: you cannot run a business otherwise because competition would then throw you out of business very quickly.

The typical reason why you would get two bills is that certain products cannot be sold by legal entities with low taxation. Then you are billed for such food (esp. alcohol) by one entity and then you get another bill for the rest of your purchase from another entity. At certain cases the split is less clear because it might be not only about alcohol. I suppose that in your example hot chocolate is sold by the part of the shop known as “bar”, and the cake is sold by the part of the shop which sales complete products.

That is, it is not per plate billing as you supposed. It is rather a different kind of optimization when technically your purchase is provided by different “departments”. In most cases it is a sort of internal procedure of the seller and your asking to combine the bill just cannot help. The seller splits the bill not because they want to add fun of entering PIN twice but because they split goods and services for their own reasons, which cannot be changed on your request. More to that, waiters and people at the counter are not even necessarily aware of actual reasons behind the splitting.

Optimization goes way beyond the scope of cafes. In Ukraine you can find even a supermarket, which structured the business so that departments, that are obvious integral parts of the facility, are run as separate low taxation legal entities. If you buy stuff from different departments you can ask to combine the purchased goods as a single transaction, but it is obviously impossible: the sellers have their own goods to sell and neither of them could sell you goods from peer department.

UPD. By coincidence, there is a fresh (today’s) publication on check splitting: Two receipts in a restaurant // Два чека в ресторане:

… hence there are two businesses under the same roof: LLC sells alcohol and (low tax) individual entrepreneur serves food.

… if you happen to visit the same place frequently, you can also notice occasional business name changes. Is it a mistery? One individual entrepreneur approaches its annual limit on revenue, then he is replaced by a new one.

The article mentions various aspects of the expense optimization as well as the fundamental reason behind two bills. Interesting part is that the source of the comment is an ex-deputy finance minister. That is, everyone out there is aware of what is going on but there is insufficient motivation to stop the farce.

dnd 5e – Food Scraps, what are they and do they go bad?

Only magically-created food has rules for spoilage

Interestingly, at this point in the development of 5e, there is no rules mechanism by which normal food spoils.

RAW, food may be obtained by characters through purchase, though foraging, or through magic.

Purchase (“Adventuring Gear”, PHB 153)

Rations. Rations consist of dry foods suitable for extended travel, including jerky, dried fruit, hardtack, and nuts.

Purchase (“Food, Drink, and Lodging”, PHB 158)

The Food, Drink, and Lodging table gives prices for individual food items and a single night’s lodging. These prices are included in your total lifestyle expenses.

Foraging (“Foraging”, DMG 111)

A foraging character finds nothing on a failed check. On a successful check, roll ld6 + the character’s Wisdom modifier to determine how much food (in pounds) the character finds, then repeat the roll for water (in gallons).

Magic (“Create Food and Water”, PHB 229)(emphasis mine)

You create 45 pounds of food and 30 gallons of water on the ground or in containers within range, enough to sustain up to fifteen humanoids or five steeds for 24 hours. The food is bland but nourishing, and spoils if uneaten after 24 hours. The water is clean and doesn’t go bad.

Notice that in all these sources of food, the only one that specifically mentions spoilage is the magically created food. The rations one can purchase for “extended travel” certainly seem like they are chosen to avoid spoilage, but notice that there is no mechanism by which fresh food foraged will go bad – no condition that raw meat you foraged in the tropical heat won’t be just as suitable to eat next week as it is now. Note that I am not saying that normal food doesn’t spoil – just that rules for this, the rules the OP asked about, do not exist.

This is a clear departure from previous editions, in which one could cheaply purchase “standard rations” (which would quickly spoil) or could pay much more for “iron rations” (which would last much longer). If you are interested in the subject, you might want to start with this and this.

To put a finer point on it, in 5e there is no mechanism by which spoiled food may be made wholesome again. The spell that previous editions used for that simply does not have that function.

“Purify Food and Drink”, PHB 270

All nonmagical food and drink within a 5-foot-radius sphere centered on a point of your choice within range is purified and rendered free of poison and disease.

Compare that is previous versions of the spell, such as in 3.5e:

This spell makes spoiled, rotten, poisonous, or otherwise contaminated food and water pure and suitable for eating and drinking. This spell does not prevent subsequent natural decay or spoilage.

The first answer to your question is that 5e simply has no mechanism for non-magical food spoilage; the scraps you have in your pocket, even uncooked meat scraps kept at room temperature, will not spoil as a consequence of anything written in to the game. If it is a truism that D&D is not a Physics Simulator, in this case neither is it a Biology Simulator. As other posts have indicated, if this is a level of detail you or your DM would like to incorporate you can do so. This could simply be by DM fiat, telling you that you scraps have spoiled, or you can create a more formal set of house rules. You might find previous editions useful in this regard. Working within the mechanics of 5e, the simplest thing to do might be to come up with a table for how long different kinds of foods may be kept before they are considered “poisoned”.

So what is the point of the personality trait?

As you say, you have so far just been collecting these scraps for role-playing your personality trait, it it is fine to have it remain there. The purpose of having specific, listed personality traits is exactly for this type of role play:

“Personality Traits”, PHB 123

Give your character two personality traits. Personality traits are small, simple ways to help you set your character apart from every other character. Your
personality traits should tell you something interesting and fun about your character. They should be self-descriptions that are specific about what makes your character stand out.

However, personality traits do not have to be limited to role play – they can have a mechanical effect, through Inspiration.

“Inspiration”, PHB 126:

Inspiration is a rule the Dungeon Master can use to reward you for playing your character in a way that’s true to his or her personality traits, ideal, bond, and flaw. By using inspiration, you can draw on your personality trait of compassion for the downtrodden to give you an edge in negotiating with the Beggar Prince…
Your DM can choose to give you inspiration for a variety of reasons. Typically, DM’s award it when you play out your personality traits, give in to the drawbacks
presented by a flaw or bond, and otherwise portray your character in a compelling way.

Since you have been role playing this all along, you may discuss with your DM whether they will be awarding Inspiration at some point based on your role play. They could use this to give you a bonus in a certain situation – as other posts have suggested, you might get Inspiration to use on an animal handling roll if you fish some table scraps out of your pocket before your interaction. Or if you are at a fancy dinner and insist on lowering your reputation with the host and other guests by saving food in your pockets, your DM might award you Inspiration for staying true to your personality.

None of this use of your personality trait needs to involve the food spoiling or the need to introduce new mechanics, since it is entirely up to DM fiat.

dnd 5e – Food Scraps, what are they and do they have a use?

My Ranger character has the Urchin personality trait of “I hide scraps of food and trinkets away in my pockets”, which I have been RPing, without thought for much benefit. I have been just saying in story that every time we eat a meal I tell the DM I am taking 1 or 2 scraps, which I have been tracking in my inventory. Occasionally if the food available is specific (“Meat pie” and “biscuit”) I have put that in a special section of my inventory “Food hidden in pockets” specifically for the personality trait, without much thought for if they get used or rot in my pockets.

I had assumed that being so generic they were similar to “rations”, as it is part of the Urchin background where the purpose would be to avoid starvation, ie. a homeless child hiding away their own rations from scraps they gather, though I haven’t actually attempted or thought of using them yet. It’s been mostly for the fun of RP.

In our latest session some questions we can’t seem to satisfy our pedantry on have come up.

  • What are food scraps?
  • Do they go bad, and after how long?
  • Are they different from or similar to rations?

I suggested that yes definitely the “meat pie” is now spoiled and changed the biscuit to “stale biscuit”. But what of these scraps and what exactly they are, we can’t seem to google up a precedent.
