We are planning to travel to India in a few weeks (we still have not booked the plane ticket) and I have not been able to get good information on the risks of using a car seat on international flights (probably Emirates or Qatar Air) or in Indian vehicles. We will be using my husband's family car (a smaller older Maruti sedan, maybe the 800) when we arrive.
I do not know if we should have headache to bring the car seat into the plane because I've heard that flight attendants do not allow passengers to install them properly. (even when installed in accordance with FAA policy). our baby is unlikely to sleep in the car seat for a long time. If we do not use the car seat in the plane, we will check the seat in its original box. That brings me to my first questions. Does anyone have experience with either option for flying with a car seat? Is it likely that the car seat will even arrive at the final destination? Can you control a car seat on international flights (to reduce the risk of loss in transit)?
Then there is the problem of using the car seat in the family vehicle with unknown belt locks. If we travel anywhere other than in the original region, we will probably hire an Innova + minivan and its driver for more space. Are auto-locking retractors common in India or will I need to use a seat belt clip?
I just want to add that I know that it is not necessary to use car seats in planes or in India, and that it is incredibly rare to see one used, but I think it helps to my difficulty in finding answers so that I can better prepare for the trip. Thank you for your help!
