data recovery – How do I find which app on my phone is putting photos deleted by Google photos in a Recycling Bin? (I can’t find the bin. Phone full.)

I connected my phone to my laptop and searched the phone for “recycl” – no matches found.
I searched my phone apps for “bin” – no relevant matches found.
I have 200 apps on my phone, but didn’t find any that seem like they would create a recycling bin.
How can I find the recycle bin / recycling bin?
In Google Photos, I deleted 500 MB of photos that had uploaded. I increased available space by zero.

photos – Contact apps lost access to media files

At some point in time (about a week ago) something happened to my Motorola Moto Z2 Play / Android 8.0 that caused my base apps (actually — just Contacts) to not have access to my media files (i.e. audio, photos etc.).

Examples:

  • all my custom ringtones (i.e. based on my own media files) were reset to default sound,
  • I cannot pick a photo for a contact because my contacts app keeps saying: “No pictures are available on the device”.

While first situation is resolved. I see my custom ringtone files in the list and I can go through my contacts and assign them again. But second situation is not resolved. I see this error all the time and I cannot change any contact’s photo.

This is verified as not a bug (tested three different contacts-like applications and all of them shows exactly the same message, when trying to change contact’s photo). But still, it seems that problem is limited to contacts-related apps only. Other apps still has read and write access to my custom files.

For example: :

  • (read) I can pick any photo or other custom file and attach it to an e-mail, send it as MMS or share it in any other way or
  • (read) upload it to OneDrive or Google Drive etc. or
  • (write) my Camera app is still able to make new photos and store them in “DCIM” or
  • (write) my sound recorder is able to record sound and write audio files.

The only thing that has changed on my phone recently and that I suspect as the cause of above metioned situation was Android 7.1.2 –> Android 8.0.0 update.

Is there anything I can do (since replacing contacts app didn’t resolve the situation) or check in this case? Or resetting the phone to factory defaults is the only option that I am left with?

Google Photos: Filtering photos before a certain date?

Is there a way to search for all photos taken before a certain date? I tried before: 31-03-2020 but this only gives me photos from that particular day (and the day before that one)

Google Photos sucking up all storage

I’m using Google Photos to back up my photo and video library.
It’s set up to store data as "high quality – unlimited storage".

However, it’s complaining about exceeding my storage quota in the Google One storage page:

Why is that happening?

data synchronization – Syncing photos Android -> Mac

I would like to accomplish the following, which, in today’s technological ecosystem, seems like it should just happen anyway:

  • I take a photo on my Android phone

  • The phone uploads it somewhere automatically (presumably Google Photos)

  • My Mac downloads it automatically into a folder

In other words, I want the photos on my android device to seamlessly appear in a folder on my Mac, without me needing to do anything besides take the photo.

I have Google Drive installed, but my photos don’t seem to be there. I tried installing “Google Backup and Sync”, but it crashed immediately and I can’t get it to work. (I’m on OS X 10.11, so maybe that’s why. I don’t intend to upgrade until I get a new machine.) I’ve head that Google Backup and Sync is quite complex and fiddly to use anyway.

Is there any other way that automatic photo sync between Android and Mac can be accomplished? If possible, I’d prefer not to use Dropbox, because mine is nearly full and I already pay for additional space on Google Drive, so I don’t want to upgrade Dropbox as well.

iphone – How do I view ALL my photos in Google Photos on mac?

On my iPhone I can see all my photos in Google photos app, however when I open google photos in webpage on my mac only a random selection are there. I have installed backup and sync.

Big picture is that I would like to wean off iCloud photos to save on storage space, but don’t want to do that until I’m sure Google photos is working properly, and it doesn’t seem to be yet.

Photos taking up space in General > iPhone Storage, but I don’t have any photos and iCloud Photos is disabled

so I recently was backing up my photos to google photos, and I usually clear everything from my photo library because it takes up space. I make sure to delete the recently deleted album as well, but I noticed that Photos still takes up space in iPhone Storage under General.

I’ve tried rebooting and resetting all settings, but it doesn’t seem to fix the problem. I disabled and deleted all of my photos in iCloud, so I don’t see how that could be the cause of this problem. I found a similar post but I’ve tried everything suggested except for restoring the iPhone.

So before I go ahead and restore my phone, I just wanted to make sure if there’s anything else I could try since that post is pretty old.

Here’s a screenshot of the issue:

ios – Can I use iCloud Photos on an iPhone without every new photo being uploaded to the cloud?

I will be switching to an iPhone soon. At the moment, my best photos reside in a nice folder structure in iCloud Photos. When getting the iPhone, i still want to be able to view those images but not clutter my iCloud Photos library with every single trivial image I take on the phone camera.

Is it possible to keep the iPhone’s Photos app connected to my iCloud photo storage and not have every image I make with the iPhone’s camera end up in iCloud as well?
