Open source is not really the same thing. In reality, everything is about collaboration.
If you use the forums as an example, instead of asking 80 administrators to create their own forum systems for their own sites, they will pool their efforts to eliminate unnecessary waste of resources.

Think of something else. Charities.
People offer some of their money to improve the lives of others.
They are not obliged to do it in the least and do it purely out of goodness of heart. Of course, there are a lot of problems and inefficiencies with charities, which I will not address here, but it is essentially the intended goal.
