I agree with all that Gary has just said – but IF you have all this thoroughly and you are actually at the stage "now is the time to play with images and colors", for an image like that, I would not apply colors other than modestly. I used a white or black alpha transparency behind the content areas, with the opposite black / white text, with the exception of the site's logo and anchors.
This is the safest choice that allows the image to give you the "feeling" and work for you rather than against you.
Photos like these are often more bulky in bandwidth, making users shit than creating value for a page. I would categorize this image – like most massive images in full screen – as "Not viable for web deployment" and irrelevant for the CONTENT.
But everything depends on what your content IS.
